They’re here—welcome back strawberries—haven’t we all been dreaming about the return of these bright, sweet berries? Aren’t we all tired of the giant red numbers we’ve bought at supermarkets during the year—a sad substitute for the real thing? These smaller, deeper colored, plucked from local plants berries that are, frankly, a completely different creature altogether from their supermarket cousins.
The flavor of these is one of life’s wonders—the sweetness, the slight tang, it’s like a bite of summer itself.
If you still find some rhubarb, or perhaps froze some, you can blend it with berries into a pie, and of course there is strawberry shortbread, strawberry jam, strawberry puree strizzled across just about anything. And of course, just eating it plain and simple, is perhaps the single greatest thing to do with that berry.
So go ahead and take a bit of summer—it’s here!
