Virginia O’Brien, OTD, OTR/L, CHT is a Occupational Therapist, with a specialty in Hand Therapy has worked since 1996 at University Orthopaedics Therapy Center, a clinic of the Fairview Hand Center and the Institute for Athletic Medicine at the University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview, at the Riverside, or West Bank campus in Minneapolis. She is the Hand Therapy Residency Coordinator. Her clinic, in collaboration with the UofM Occupational Therapy Program, is starting one of the first hand therapy residency programs in the USA. This program starts this August.

Fairview and mention that you work at the University Orthopedic Therapy Center and partner with University of Minnesota Physicians (or physicians from the UofM) to provide care for a wide variety of orthopedic issues.

She received her occupational therapy doctorate at Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions, Provo, Utah, and her occupational therapy bachelor of science at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

She provides hand therapy to people with a wide range of problems: repetitive stress injury to traumatic injury, from babies to the elderly. Her clinic works closely with the University of Minnesota Physicians Orthopaedic clinic, as well as physicians from around the Twin Cities, and surrounding areas who refer patients to their clinic.

She has taught therapists on the subject of “dynamic stability of the thumb” since 2005 across the nation and internationally, as well as taught courses and workshops on wrist injuries, and evidence-based intervention for the stiff hand. She is published author in the Journal of Hand Therapy, is currently on the review board for the Journal of Hand Surgery, and a contributing editor to The Yearbook of Hand and Upper Limb Surgery since 2012.Her clinical research interests are centered in the care of the painful thumb and wrist injuries.
